Frequently Asked Questions

Is abortion safe?

Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures. Less than 0.05% of first-trimester abortion patients have a major complication that might need hospital care.

Will the procedure hurt?

At Lilith, we strive to provide our patients with a pain-free procedure. We offer a number of medication options to help manage your pain and keep you comfortable. Most of our patients report feeling no discomfort during the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

Abortion procedures in the first trimester can typically be completed in less than 5 minutes. Second-trimester procedures can typically be completed in less than 20 minutes.

How long will I be at the clinic?

In most cases up to 16 weeks the procedure can be completed the same day. It normally lasts less than 10 minutes, and your total in-clinic time is usually less than 2 hours.

If your pregnancy is over 16-18 weeks, we will complete the procedure over two days. Your total time in the clinic is usually less than 2 hours each day, and the procedure normally lasts less than 20 minutes on the second day.

How much bleeding will I have?

The amount of bleeding is variable from one patient to the next. Some patients may bleed for 1-2 days, while others may have spotting for several weeks or even months. The bleeding may stop and start again several times. Some patients experience passing large clots (the size of a lemon) after an abortion, which may be normal.

Can I drive myself for my procedure?

Depending upon what type of medication you choose to help with pain, you may need to have someone drive you home after the procedure.

When can I return to work/school?

Most patients will be able to return to office work or school the day after a first trimester abortion.

Second trimester patients and those with more strenuous jobs will need a longer period of rest (two to four days). We will provide all patients with a discreet work/school release letter that does not specify that you had an abortion.

What is the recovery time?

Many women can return to work or school the day after their abortion. You may have cramping and spotting for several weeks after your procedure, and this can be managed with over the counter pain medications.

Do you take insurance?

At our Seattle and Portland offices, we accept most major insurance plans.

Will a “real” doctor be performing my surgery?

Yes. Our doctors are Board Certified and expertly trained to provide abortion care.

When will I be able to resume sexual activity after my termination?

Even though there is not any scientific data to answer this question, we recommend you wait one week before you put anything inside your vagina. You can get pregnant soon after an abortion so we recommend using a birth control method if you resume sexual activity and do not want to get pregnant.

Do you offer Emergency Contraception or the morning after pill?

You can get this medication over the counter by visiting your local pharmacy.

What happens if I have a problem after my abortion?

Lilith has a physician on call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. If you have any questions or are experiencing post operative problems, do not hesitate to call us.

Will I be able to have children in the future?

Studies indicate that abortions have no effect on your ability to get pregnant in the future.

How much does it cost to have an abortion?

The price depends on how far along you are and what type of abortion you choose. Please call our office for further details.

Do you provide financial assistance?

I want my appointment to be anonymous, is that okay?
